In 2005 scientists from around the world, recognizing the necessity to human societies of ecosystem services, (including pollination by native bees) created "The Millennium EcosystemAssessment. " In creating the Millennium Ecosystem Services Report, the scientists organized these services into 4 categories: Supporting (nutrient cycling, soil formation) Provisioning (food, fresh water, wood fiber), Regulating (climate regulation, flood control, water purification) and Cultural (aesthetic, spiritual, educational). For self-preservation reasons alone we humans need to protect the work of wildlife by keeping habitats free from chemical contamination that can interfere with the work. This is a critically important concept. We at RCC have described how wildlife at work can contribute to these essential services andhow pesticides can interfere with and harm these ecosystem benefits which are provided at no cost by nature.
